Rabbi Heschel-Reverend King Celebration
January 7, 2006
at 7 p.m.
at the Missouri Historical
Society-Jefferson Memorial
Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel walked arm in arm in Selma, Alabama to bring justice to our nation. As Rabbi Heschel said, they marched to “pray with our feet.” JUJ's annual Rabbi Heschel-Reverend King Celebration, which coincides with the anniversary of Rabbi Heschel's death and birthday of Reverend King, honors the goals and achievements of members of our community who share their quest for justice. The 2006 Heschel-King honorees are Sister Antona Ebo and Rabbi Bernard Lipnick, two religious leaders in the Saint Louis community who have had an important impact on the civil rights movement locally and nationally. Sister Ebo and Rabbi Lipnick traveled to Selma two days after Bloody Sunday to support the effort to register voters and Sister Ebo was selected to lead the second (but still unsuccessful) attempt to cross the Pettus Bridge . Although they faced a barrage of criticism they were not intimidated from their path for justice. Their courageous journey continues to be an inspiration to all of us.
As a key part of this event, we will be publishing and distributing a program book. The book will honor Sister Ebo and Rabbi Lipnick through their stories and achievements, and will contain information about JUJ and our supporters. The book will be distributed at the event and through out the community. This is a wonderful opportunity to join us in honoring Rabbi Lipnick and Sister Ebo and what they stand for. Deadline
extended to Friday, Dec 30, 2005 Jews United for Justice is a St. Louis not-for-profit organization whose mission is to work with partners in the community for the goals of economic, social and racial justice in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. We strive to be a progressive voice in the Jewish community and a Jewish voice in the progressive community. Thank you, Rabbi Andrea
